Two of the most common pain relievers on any pharmacy shelf — Paracetamol and Ibuprofen — are often used interchangeably. But they work differently, and choosing the right one can make a real difference to how quickly, and how safely, you feel better.
What Each Drug Does
Paracetamol reduces fever and relieves mild to moderate pain by acting on the brain’s pain and temperature centres. Ibuprofen belongs to a class of medicines called NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) — it relieves pain, reduces fever, and reduces inflammation and swelling.
When to Reach for Paracetamol
Paracetamol is generally a good first choice for fever, headaches, and mild pain — and it’s often recommended for children and people who can’t take anti-inflammatory medication.
When to Reach for Ibuprofen
Ibuprofen is especially useful where inflammation is part of the problem — think sprains, muscle pain, toothache, or menstrual cramps — because it tackles both the pain and the swelling behind it.
Who Should Avoid Ibuprofen
Ibuprofen and other NSAIDs aren’t suitable for everyone. People with stomach ulcers, certain kidney conditions, asthma, or who are pregnant (especially in the third trimester) should avoid it or use it only under medical guidance. Paracetamol is generally considered the gentler option on the stomach.
Dosage Guidance
Always follow the dosing instructions on the package or from your pharmacist — and never exceed the maximum daily dose. Children’s doses are typically based on weight and age, so check with us before giving either medicine to a child.
